RE-ROOFING AND RE-CLADDING CASE HISTORY
AMBERLEY
Problem:
The school had a leaking and poorly-insulated flat roof together with overglazed and uninsulated external walls. These factors resulted in high maintenance costs, large winter fuel bills, glare and summer overheating. The brief was both to rectify these faults and make the external appearance more sympathetic to the attractive village setting.

Solution: -
Pillar Consultancy's solution was to form a pitched over-roof, using timber trusses, supported on the perimeter columns of the existing structure. Planning requirements dictated the pitch of the roof and the use of man-made 'slates'. A generous overhang was formed to provide some weather protection for the new brickwork facade and insulation levels were improved in both roof and walls. Further improvements in thermal efficiency and maintenance profile were achieved by reducing the area of glazing and using thermally-broken, double-glazed, aluminium windows. Construction took place during the summer holidays in order to minimise disruption to the operation of the school. The use of existing plinths to support the brickwork and the prefabrication of inner linings helped to reduce the length of the contract, which included a new central heating system, replacement floor finishes and internal redecoration
