INFANTS SCHOOL (Pitched over-roofing /structural strengthening/asbestos removal)
This school was originally built in phases during the late 1950s and early 1960s using various versions of a commercial timber framed system of construction. Despite several repair and strengthening operations the structural condition of the school gave cause for concern and props were installed in classrooms under the roof beams showing most deflection.
In conjunction with a structural engineer with particular knowledge of the structural history of this building Pillar Consultancy were asked to apply a pitched over-roof to the project combined with structural remedial works and asbestos removal. Varying types of over-roof indicative costs were given as ranges and the authority selected the most economical.
In considering a pitched over-roof for the school (to remove some of the weight from the existing distressed roof beams) a solution was required which would also contribute to the support of the existing structure. The Structural Engineer favoured a solution which placed spanning trusses directly over the beam spans of existing classroom modules with end bearing coinciding. Various schemes along these lines were produced but were very difficult to achieve in room size spans within a deep plan building and complicated hips and valleys resulted. Another alternative was a hybrid solution retaining areas of flat roof in between pitched roof "features". These schemes were abandoned in favour of a simple shed like solution using variable height gables and fascias to achieve the required cloaking effect
